Mumbai’s Big Cleanup: Residents, NGOs, and BMC Join Forces for Deep Cleaning Drive

Mumbai, 22nd December 2023: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has issued directives to conduct deep cleaning drives across all areas of the city, aiming to rejuvenate and enhance cleanliness levels. In compliance, the following instructions are issued to be diligently followed by all wards.
Coverage: The city, divided into 25 administrative wards, will be covered within eight weeks, spanning four in December 2023 and four in January 2024. Each designated day will focus on at least one administrative ward per zone.
Timings: The cleaning operations will commence at 06:30 AM and continue until 2:00 PM.
Participants: The participation is encouraged from all BMC departments, public representatives, celebrities, NGOs, NSS, school and college students, RWA/ALM, housing societies’ representatives, socially active citizens, eminent personalities, and media representatives (print/social), among others.
Method of implementation:
– Deputy Municipal Commissioner (SWM) and respective Joint Municipal Commissioners/Zonal Deputy Municipal Commissioners will decide the schedule of wards and the route of VIPs in advance.
– Joint Municipal Commissioners/Zonal Deputy Municipal Commissioners will finalize the weekly program’s ward selection within their jurisdiction.
– Field visits by Jt.M.C. / D.M.C. and Assistant Commissioner of Wards will be conducted daily between 07:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to assess cleanliness and ensure adherence to pollution control guidelines.
– The Deep Cleaning Drive will cover all BMC establishments in the designated ward, coordinated with respective Assistant Commissioners of wards.
– Assistant Commissioners of wards will appoint nodal officers responsible for reporting compliance and scheduling activities within their respective wards.
– A comprehensive list of assets, including roads, footpaths, gardens, markets, iconic places, and more, will be compiled by Assistant Commissioners of wards.
– Compliance with air pollution guidelines in Mumbai will be ensured by Assistant Commissioners of wards.
– Zonal Executive Engineers (SWM) will oversee the Mechanical Power Sweepers’ efficiency and provide support to Assistant Commissioners of wards for a successful Deep Cleaning Drive.
– Public awareness and participation will be promoted, engaging RWA/ALM, housing societies’ representatives, socially active citizens, and various organizations.
Publicity: The PRO Dept will deploy teams to provide extensive coverage of this Deep Cleaning Drive.
Reports and records: Each ward will maintain a detailed record of manpower engaged, additional machinery used, debris removed, roads painted with signage, and other relevant details. The report is to be submitted to the PRO Dept by 6:00 PM on the day of the Deep Cleaning Drive.
