Mumbai’s Coastal Road to Connect Northbound Traffic to Bandra-Worli Sea Link
Mumbai, 12th September 2024: Starting Friday, September 13, northbound vehicles on Mumbai’s Coastal Road will have direct access to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, as announced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Coastal Road project, with an estimated cost of Rs 14,000 crore, aims to cut down travel time between South Mumbai and the suburbs, improving commuting efficiency.
Before the new link is opened for public use, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, will inspect the connection on Thursday afternoon, according to a BMC official. This new route is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity across the city.
Northbound vehicles travelling from South Mumbai to Bandra via the Coastal Road will be able to directly access the sea link between 7 am and 11 pm. Southbound vehicles will still need to use the existing route until both directions of the Coastal Road are connected to the sea link, as per civic officials.
This marks the fourth phase of the road’s operational rollout. The southbound section, from Worli to Marine Drive, was opened on March 11. The northbound section initially opened from Marine Drive to Haji Ali on June 10, followed by the stretch from Haji Ali to Worli on July 11.
Currently, motorists can travel from Marine Drive to Worli in under 15 minutes, but traffic bottlenecks still occur near the Worli exit during peak hours due to the absence of a direct sea link connection. Construction of this 10.58-kilometer project began in October 2018.
