Mumbai’s Metro 3 Expansion To Connect Key Urban Areas By March 2025

Mumbai, 23rd December 2024: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is set to roll out a crucial phase of the Metro 3 network by March 2025, bringing metro services to Mumbai’s island city. This expansion will connect Acharya Atre Chowk station in Worli with six prominent stations: Dharavi, Shitladevi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk.

These stations are located in key urban zones, encompassing educational institutions, religious sites, corporate hubs, and thriving commercial areas. The initiative seeks to improve public transportation in these densely populated regions, significantly bolstering Mumbai’s transit system.

MMRC’s Director of Projects, S K Gupta, confirmed, “The 9.7 km section is targeted for completion by March 2025. Track-laying and Overhead Catenary System (OHE) works are done, with architectural and signalling tasks nearing completion.” Trial runs are underway, with trains running in both directions at Acharya Atre Chowk station to collect data for software enhancements.

To meet the timeline, MMRC is preparing to request approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). The process is expected to be expedited since the rolling stock received clearance during Phase I trials on the Aarey-JVLR-BKC route. MMRC is also finalizing this phase’s operational plans, including train deployment and service schedules.

The first phase of Metro 3, which commenced operations on 5th October 2024, currently accommodates around 22,000 daily passengers. The extension is projected to substantially increase ridership as the metro extends to more populous areas.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also announced in the Legislative Council session that the BKC-Colaba segment is on track for a May 2025 launch.

Spanning 33.5 kilometres, Metro 3 is an underground corridor connecting Colaba, Bandra, and SEEPZ. With 27 stations—26 underground and one at grade—it represents a transformative step in upgrading Mumbai’s public transport system and alleviating traffic woes.
