Mumbai’s Water Stock Reaches 37%, Concerns Persist Despite Marginal Rain Increase
Mumbai, 17th July 2024: Water levels in Mumbai’s lakes, which are crucial for the city’s water supply, have seen only marginal increases due to limited heavy rainfall. According to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), as of Monday, the collective water stock across the seven reservoirs stands at 37 per cent, totalling 5,46,674 million litres.
Mumbai sources its water from Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna lakes. The current water levels reported by BMC show varying percentages: Tansa at 73.12 per cent, Modak Sagar at 57.77 per cent, Middle Vaitarna at 34.41 per cent, Upper Vaitarna at 7.06 per cent, Bhatsa at 36.41 per cent, Vihar at 54.46 per cent, and Tulsi at 84.64 per cent of their respective useful water levels.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rainfall for Mumbai on Monday. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 29 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 23 degrees Celsius. Additionally, BMC has alerted about a high tide of approximately 3.13 meters expected at 8:23 pm and a low tide of about 2.52 meters at 2:59 pm today.
Recent rainfall data shows that the island city received 3.43 mm, eastern Mumbai 0.59 mm, and western Mumbai 5.01 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8 am.
Meanwhile, IMD’s Bhubaneswar centre has predicted heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) across several districts in Odisha over the next four days due to a low-pressure area over south Odisha. Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Koraput are expected to experience significant rainfall on Wednesday, with further downpours likely in other districts on Thursday. Another low-pressure area is anticipated around July 19, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in several districts on Friday and Saturday.
