Navi Mumbai: Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar Appeals To Citizens To Separate Wet And Dry Waste

Navi Mumbai, 26th March 2023: Waste disposal is a very important factor in solid waste management. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s Scientific Solid Waste Treatment Project in the Turbhe MIDC area is known as one of the best projects in the country. However, from the position that cleanliness is something to be regulated and there is a need to improve the cleaning process more and more, Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar is paying close attention to solid waste disposal and city cleanliness. The municipal commissioner has appealed to the citizens to separate wet and dry waste.

Narvekar, City Engineer Sanjay Desai, Additional City Engineer of Environment Department Shirish Aardwad, and related officials visited the solid waste treatment plant and inspected the working system there.

On behalf of the Municipal Corporation, emphasis is being placed on sorting the waste from the citizens at the place of generation. While expecting this from the citizens, the commissioner gave instructions to ensure that the classified waste collected by the citizens does not get mixed up during collection and transportation. Keeping in mind that it has to be done, the commissioner has appealed to the citizens to take care that the work of the sanitation workers does not increase, and while disposing of garbage in their homes, they should put it in separate bins like wet and dry and give some relief to the sanitation workers from their work.

At this time, the commissioner gave instructions to pay strict attention to the health and safety of the workers working at the project site. At the project site, windrows are prepared by spraying bioculture on the wet waste in 28 days and after that organic fertilizer is prepared by processing through various sieves. This organic fertilizer is used to grow more than 200 Udaiyans (gardens) in the city of Navi Mumbai known as the City of Udaiyans. Similarly, individuals and farmers in and outside the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area buy and use this fertilizer for irrigation and agriculture. The commissioner indicated paying attention to the maximum use of this fertilizer by conducting a comparative study of the daily production and use of this fertilizer.

At this project site, plastic is being processed and granules are made from plastic. Preventive plastics and plastic bags caught by professionals are brought to the project site and disposed of scientifically. The commissioner gave instructions for more effective public awareness so that citizens should stop using single-use plastic completely. 60 d.m. Capacity is a leachate processing plant in which the leachate is processed. The commissioner expressed his satisfaction that the treated wastewater is being recycled here.

Essence is being sprayed on the solid waste coming to the project site, and the commissioner gave instructions to ensure that the citizens do not suffer from bad smells. Considering the increasing population of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation area, it is necessary to set up a solid waste processing plant with increased capacity accordingly planning should be done and prompt action should be taken regarding the demand for space for the new missile site. The instructions were given by the commissioner at this time. Apart from this, to realize the goal of ‘Zero Garbage’, it is necessary to bring a minimum amount of waste to the project site, and in this regard, the commissioner also instructed to plan for the establishment of waste collection centres on a circular basis to decentralize waste collection.
