Navi Mumbai to Rebuild Water Pumping Station to Combat Flooding in Belapur

Mumbai, 26th July 2024: Residents of low-lying areas in Belapur can look forward to improved flood management starting next year, as the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) prepares to reconstruct a water pumping station in the area.
Persistent flooding issues in Belapur’s sectors 4, 5, and 6 have led the NMMC to take action. The current water pumping station, built by CIDCO nearly 40 years ago, is in poor condition and will be entirely rebuilt with updated machinery. Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde noted, “The existing structure is outdated and requires a complete overhaul. We will be installing modern pumping equipment as part of this project.”
The total cost for the redevelopment is estimated at ₹34 crores, with an expected completion time of 14 months. However, the commissioner has requested that the project be completed within 12 months. The significance of the initiative was underscored during the project’s ground-breaking ceremony on July 23, attended by MLA Manda Mhatre.
MLA Mhatre shared her personal experience with flooding during the monsoons and emphasized the critical nature of the project. “Belapur’s low-lying areas are highly susceptible to flooding. The new pumping house will help mitigate these issues, and I will be actively monitoring the project’s progress,” Mhatre stated.
Additionally, Commissioner Shinde highlighted plans to desilt and clean the city’s holding ponds to prevent flooding in other areas. “Holding ponds are designed to manage excess water and prevent flood situations. We are seeking permission from relevant authorities for a major cleanup of these ponds to ensure they function effectively during heavy rains and high tides,” Shinde added.
