12th Mar 2024: India’s quest for Paris 2024 Olympics boxing quotas fell short as Nishant Dev narrowly missed securing a spot at the first World Boxing Qualification Tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy. Falling short in the quarter-finals against American boxer Omari Jones, Nishant’s defeat concluded India’s efforts at the tournament without securing any Paris 2024 quotas.

In a closely contested bout, Nishant Dev faced a formidable opponent in Omari Jones, a world championships silver medallist, eventually losing by a narrow 4-1 split verdict. Despite displaying resilience and fighting spirit, Nishant’s journey ended in the quarter-finals, leaving India without a Paris 2024 quota from the Busto Arsizio meet.

The disappointment deepened as none of the nine Indian boxers, including prominent names like Shiva Thapa, Mohammed Hussamuddin, and Jaismine Lamboria, managed to secure quotas during the tournament. Despite their commendable efforts, Indian boxers faced tough competition and challenges, ultimately unable to secure coveted Olympic quotas.

India’s hopes for Paris 2024 quotas in boxing now rest on the upcoming second World Qualification Tournament scheduled in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3. With up to 51 quotas available at the Bangkok meet, Indian boxers will have another opportunity to secure Olympic quotas and keep the nation’s aspirations alive in the realm of international boxing.

As India’s boxing contingent prepares for the upcoming challenge, the focus remains on maximizing opportunities and striving for excellence to secure Paris 2024 quotas and represent the nation on the grand Olympic stage. Despite the setback in Italy, Indian boxers remain determined and hopeful for success in the upcoming qualifiers, aiming to fulfill their Olympic dreams and bring glory to the nation.
