Pise Pumping Station Fire Prompts 15% Water Cut in Mumbai, Residents Brace for Summer Struggles

Mumbai, 28th February 2024: Even though the scorching heat has not intensified yet, the citizens of Mumbai are already feeling the heat of the summer due to a water cut implemented in the city. Following a fire at the pumping station in Pise on Monday, a 15% water cut has been enforced across Mumbai. The incident, which resulted in the complete burning out of one of the transformers at the pumping station, necessitated the shutdown of some pumps.

Repair work on the damaged transformer is estimated to be completed by March 5, prompting the continuation of the 15% water cut in the city until then. Residents are urged to take note of this development and adjust their water usage accordingly.

Areas Affected by Water Cut:
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is contemplating a 10% water cut citywide due to dwindling water reserves in the seven dams that supply water to Mumbai. In addition, a 15% water cut has been put into effect in the water supply from Mumbai 2 and 3 canals to the entire city, including the western suburbs, eastern suburbs, Thane city, Bhiwandi, and outer city sections starting from midnight on Tuesday.

Following the extinguishing of the transformer fire, the administration swiftly assessed the situation and initiated repair work, with 15 out of 20 pumps now operational. The crisis and reduction in water supply at the onset of summer have caused significant inconvenience to Mumbai’s residents. Citizens are urged to cooperate with the authorities by conserving water during this period.

The current water reduction measures are a response to the crisis caused by the fire, raising questions about potential future water cut extensions during summer seasons.
