Dombivli, 26th June 2023: In the wake of incessant rainfall over the past two days, various parts of Dombivli and Kalyan city have been hit by flooding, causing inconvenience to residents and disrupting sports activities. The situation has been exacerbated by overflowing drains, leading to water gushing onto the roads. One of the areas affected by this deluge is the Savalaram Maharaj Sports Complex, situated in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area. This is causing inconvenience to citizens and players who come to play on the field in the morning and evening.
Concerns have been raised about the lack of adequate planning prior to the rainy season. Previously, measures were taken to fill cracks in the 20-acre field with soil, ensuring water did not accumulate. Such planning does not happen now. Weddings and other public entertainment events are held on the grounds. Pits are dug in many places to place mandap. The players said that these pits fill with water during monsoons, and the feet of the players get stuck in them, causing accidents.
On Sunday morning, former corporators Ravi Patil, Nilesh Mhatre, and Bandu Patil tried to clear the clogged drain holes around the ground with the help of iron rods to remove the standing water from the Sports Complex. Due to this, the amount of water in the field decreased. “No one is paying attention to the sports complex when this responsibility belongs to the municipality. The badminton court, tennis court, and women’s gymnasium in the sports hall are closed, causing inconvenience to the players,” Former corporator Ravi Patil said.
“The municipality could not maintain the only grand-size sports complex in Dombivli. Citizens come to walk in this area every day from 4 a.m. to late at night. Players use the field for practice. Now the players practising football, cricket, and other sports are suffering due to water inundation in the ground,” Patil added further.
The sportspersons are demanding that the municipal commissioner should immediately order the concerned officials to ensure that water does not overflow in the Savalaram Maharaj sports complex. Many citizens have registered as lifetime members to avail themselves of the sports facilities of the Complex. Citizens are expressing their regret that they are not getting the facilities in return for the fee.
