Senior Citizen Duped of Rs 90,000 in Online Shopping Scam in Bandra

Mumbai, 25th June 2025: A 71-year-old woman from Bandra was cheated of ₹90,000 after she attempted to return a ₹1,500 dress purchased online. The incident, which escalated from a simple return request to a cyber fraud and death threat, has been registered by the Bandra police.

According to police, the woman had ordered a dress via a shopping app. Unsatisfied with the purchase, she searched for the company’s customer care number on Google on June 22. She dialed a number listed online and spoke to a man identifying himself as Sahil Kumar. He promised to process the return and said she would receive a call shortly.

Soon after, the complainant received a call from another individual, Amit Mishra, who asked her to open her Google Pay app and enter some details for the refund. Trusting him, she followed the instructions—only to receive a message shortly after, notifying her that ₹90,000 had been debited from her bank account.

Shocked by the loss, the woman informed her daughter, who then contacted the number. Disturbingly, the man on the other end not only refused to help but threatened to kill them and bomb the building where the daughter works.

Following the complaint, Bandra police have registered a case under sections 66(C) and 318(4) of the Information Technology Act, and sections 319(2) and 351(2) of the Indian Penal Code. Investigations are ongoing.

Police have advised citizens to avoid searching customer service numbers on open platforms like Google and instead rely on official websites or apps. They also warned against sharing any sensitive information or clicking on unknown links during refund processes.
