Mumbai, 25th December 2023: The Liberian-flagged chemical/oil tanker, MV Chem Pluto, which was earlier reported as attacked by a suspected drone on December 23, safely reached Mumbai and anchored at Outer Anchorage off Mumbai at 15:30 hrs on December 25, 2023, carrying 21 Indian and 01 Vietnamese crew.
Upon arrival, the Indian Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team conducted a preliminary inspection of the vessel to assess the type and nature of the attack. The analysis of the attack area and debris found on the ship strongly suggests a drone attack. However, a more in-depth forensic and technical analysis will be necessary to determine the attack vector, including the type and quantity of explosive used.
A joint investigation by various agencies has been initiated following the analysis conducted by the Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Team.
MV Chem Pluto has been cleared for further operations by her company-in-charge in Mumbai. The vessel is slated to undergo mandatory checks by inspecting authorities before engaging in Ship to Ship (STS) cargo transfers. Subsequently, docking and repairs of the damaged portion of MV Chem Pluto are anticipated.
In response to the recent surge in attacks in the Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy has strategically deployed Guided Missile Destroyers, including INS Mormugao, INS Kochi, and INS Kolkata, to maintain a deterrent presence in various areas. Additionally, long-range maritime reconnaissance P8I aircraft are consistently assigned tasks to uphold domain awareness.
The Western Naval Command’s Maritime Operations Centre is actively monitoring the situation, closely coordinating with the Coast Guard and all relevant agencies to ensure the security and stability of maritime operations in the region.
