Teenage Girl Critical After Man Sets Her on Fire in Mumbai
Mumbai, 4th March 2025: A 17-year-old girl is in critical condition with severe burn injuries after a man allegedly set her on fire in Mumbai’s Andheri area, police reported on Tuesday. The teenager, who sustained 60% burns, is fighting for her life at Dr. R. N. Cooper Hospital.
According to officials, both the victim and the accused, a 30-year-old man from Marol, had been acquainted for the past few months. However, the girl’s mother had recently warned the man to stay away from her daughter. The exact reason behind the attack is still under investigation.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday near a hospital in the Marol Gaonthan area. Reports indicate that the accused, identified as Jitendra alias Jitu Tambe, approached the girl while she was sitting with her friends. He allegedly doused her with petrol and set her on fire before suffering burn injuries himself.
The girl sustained burns on multiple parts of her body, including her face, neck, stomach, hands, legs, and private areas. A local boy informed the victim’s mother about the attack, prompting her to rush to the scene, where she found her daughter severely injured.
According to the FIR, upon seeing her mother, the girl managed to say, “I did nothing wrong; Jitu poured petrol on me and set me on fire.”
The victim’s mother had previously questioned her about the nature of her relationship with the accused, but the girl had denied any romantic involvement. Despite this, the mother later confronted the man and asked him to stop meeting her daughter.
Authorities confirmed that the accused also suffered burn injuries and has been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
A case has been registered against him under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing grievous harm using a dangerous substance, and an investigation is underway.
