Thane: Kavesar Lake Beautification Plan Faces Public Backlash Over Ecological Concerns

Thane, 5th June 2025: A beautification project planned around Kavesar Lake in Hiranandani Estate has sparked strong opposition from local residents and environmental activists, who fear the initiative may disturb the delicate wetland ecosystem of the area’s last natural lake.

The project, launched by local authorities and supported by Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske, includes a tree plantation drive and the development of public amenities such as a walking path, amphitheatre, gazebo, skywatch tower, and seating zones. Officials have clarified that the lake itself will not be altered.

However, critics argue that modifying the surrounding terrain could irreparably damage the natural habitat. An online petition opposing the project had gathered over 4,000 signatures by Wednesday evening, with activists urging the Thane municipal commissioner to halt the plantation drive scheduled for Thursday.

“This is the last surviving natural water body in the area. We’ve witnessed the degradation of other lakes in Thane under similar beautification efforts,” said Kailash Anerao, a local resident leading the campaign.

Defending the initiative, MP Mhaske said the project was conceived in response to citizen demands for a developed recreational space. Despite this, activists remain firm that conservation should take precedence over cosmetic upgrades.

Environmentalists are calling for an ecological assessment and greater public consultation before any further steps are taken.
