Thane Police Proposes Installation of Over 6,000 CCTV Cameras for Enhanced Surveillance

Thane, 12th December 2023:The Thane Police have submitted a proposal to the Maharashtra State Government seeking approval for the installation of more than 6,000 state-of-the-art CCTV cameras across the cities of Thane, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur in the district. The proposed cameras are intended to be strategically placed at 1,997 locations, covering signal areas, main squares, schools, colleges, and secluded spots within the cities.
These advanced CCTV cameras are expected to play a crucial role in crime prevention, law enforcement, and monitoring traffic rule violations in the designated areas. The proposal is currently under consideration, and sources suggest that approval is likely to be granted soon.
The cities of Thane, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur fall within the jurisdiction of the Thane Police Commissionerate, which oversees a total of 35 police stations. Despite efforts by police teams and the Crime Investigation Branch, the current police manpower is deemed insufficient compared to the growing population. Instances of gold chain theft and other crimes persist, necessitating an augmentation of surveillance infrastructure.
While the Thane Municipal Corporation has installed 1,750 CCTV cameras within the city, the geographical structure demands a more extensive network for comprehensive coverage. The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation has installed 1,000 CCTV cameras under the SmartCity initiative, and the Thane Police are aiming to replicate this success in their jurisdiction.
The proposed 6,051 CCTV cameras will be strategically placed at 1,997 locations, with a focus on main squares, signal areas, and other critical points in the city. The cameras will include fixed cameras, 360-degree rotating cameras, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras for clear vehicle identification in low-light conditions, and Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras to record vehicle speed.
Connecting to the Thane Police control room, these sophisticated cameras will enable real-time monitoring of crime and traffic situations throughout the city. The enhanced surveillance infrastructure is expected to fortify law enforcement efforts, improve public safety, and streamline traffic management.
