Thane Traffic Police Directs Hotel Operators to Ensure Safe Transport for Intoxicated Customers on New Year’s Eve

Thane, 28th December 2023: The Deputy Commissioner of Police of Thane Traffic Branch has issued directives to hotel, bar, and dhaba operators in the city regarding arrangements for customers who become heavily intoxicated on New Year’s Eve. The traffic police have instructed establishments to provide drivers to intoxicated customers with their vehicles or arrange transportation via rickshaw or car to their desired destination. If these options are unavailable, the establishments are instructed to allow the inebriated customers to stay at the hotel until their intoxication subsides.

In preparation for New Year’s Eve, the Thane traffic department is launching a ‘zero accident’ campaign to reduce the number of accidents caused by drunken driving. A meeting with office bearers and hoteliers of the Thane City Hotel Association was organized at the Traffic Branch office, where Deputy Commissioner of Transport Department Dr Vinay Kumar Rathod provided important instructions to the hoteliers.

With large parties and celebrations taking place in hotels and bars across the district for New Year’s Eve, the traffic police aim to prevent accidents caused by intoxicated drivers. The directive comes in the wake of a recent accident in the Shanti Nagar area of Ulhasnagar, where a drunk driver collided with a rickshaw and a two-wheeler, resulting in three fatalities.

To avoid such incidents, the directive emphasizes refraining from serving alcohol to individuals planning to drive. If a customer has consumed alcohol, the responsibility falls on the respective bar and hotel operators to ensure their safe transport home. The Deputy Commissioner instructed establishments to provide their drivers or arrange transportation by car or rickshaw for intoxicated customers.

The initiative aims to enhance safety on the roads during New Year’s Eve celebrations, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring the well-being of both drivers and pedestrians.
