Pune, 5th Mar 2024: Marking a historic moment as India will be represented in the team events for the first time in Olympic history. This confirmation came from the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) on Monday.

India’s men’s team, ranked 15th globally, and the women’s team, ranked 13th, earned their quotas based on the latest March rankings. Each of the men’s and women’s team events at the Paris Olympics will feature 16 table tennis teams.

The qualification process awarded quotas to the highest-ranked teams that hadn’t already qualified through previous tournaments. Alongside India, Thailand (11), Poland (12), and Sweden (15) secured spots for the women’s event, while Croatia (12) and Slovenia (11) joined India in the men’s event.

Despite missing out on Olympic quotas at the World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals 2024, the Indian teams clinched two quotas each in the men’s and women’s singles events as per the rankings route.

At Tokyo 2020, India was represented by a four-member table tennis contingent, participating only in singles and mixed doubles events. However, with the secured team quotas, the Indian teams are set to make a significant mark in Paris.

Ultimately, the participation of athletes at the Paris Games depends on the selection made by their National Olympic Committees (NOC). The table tennis team events will commence from the round of 16 onwards at the Paris Olympics.

India’s quest for an Olympic medal in table tennis continues, with hopes riding high on the historic representation at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
