Two Arrested in South Mumbai for Murder of Friend with Disabilities

Mumbai, 6th August 2024: Two individuals, both with speech and hearing impairments, have been arrested in South Mumbai for allegedly murdering a friend.

The Mumbai Police, operating out of the Pydhonie police station, reported that the victim, Arshad Ali Sadik Ali Shaikh, who also had speech and hearing impairments, was attacked with a hammer. The suspects have been identified as Shivjeet Singh and Jay Pravin Chawda.

The incident occurred on August 4 at Chawda’s residence in Gulalwadi. Shaikh sustained fatal head injuries from the assault and was pronounced dead at the scene. The hammer used in the attack was later recovered by the police.

According to authorities, the three had connected through a group for the deaf and mute and were reportedly close friends. After the murder, Singh and Chawda allegedly placed Shaikh’s body in a bag.

The crime was discovered on August 5 when a Railway Protection Force (RPF) officer at Dadar Railway Station noticed Chawda struggling with a heavy bag. The officer intervened, finding Shaikh’s body inside, and subsequently informed the police.

Singh, who works at a private firm, was asleep when the police apprehended him at his home in Ulhasnagar. The police plan to employ a sign language interpreter to better understand the motives behind the crime.

Both Singh and Chawda have been charged with murder and concealing evidence, and are currently in police custody as the investigation proceeds.
