Two Coaches Of Local Train Derail At Mumbai Central During Maintenance Operation
Mumbai, 14th October 2024: On Sunday afternoon, two coaches of an empty local train derailed while entering a car shed at Mumbai Central, disrupting services on the Western Railway. The derailment occurred around 12:10 PM during a routine maintenance operation when the train was being transferred into the shed. According to a railway spokesperson, no passengers were on board and no injuries were reported.
The incident primarily affected suburban services, particularly on the slow track heading towards Dadar. To mitigate the impact on commuters, Western Railway rerouted trains to the fast line between Churchgate and Mumbai Central. Technical staff and emergency response teams were promptly dispatched to the site to expedite the process of rerailing the affected coaches and clearing the blocked track.
After the coaches were successfully rerailed, a thorough inspection of both the track and train will be conducted to assess any damage or underlying issues that may have caused the derailment. An official stated that necessary repairs would be made to ensure the safety and reliability of the infrastructure.
This incident underscores the critical need for regular maintenance and safety checks on tracks near car sheds. The Western Railway, in collaboration with other railway authorities, is expected to carry out a detailed investigation into the cause of the derailment to prevent similar incidents in the future.
A railway activist commented, “Fortunately, no one was injured in this incident, and the railway authorities acted quickly to minimize service disruptions. However, it’s crucial that lessons are learned from this situation, and measures are implemented to prevent future occurrences by prioritizing regular maintenance and safety inspections.”
