Vasai-Virar to Face Four-Day Water Crisis Due to Power Outages, Says VVCMC

Vasai-Virar, 17th June 2025: Residents of Vasai-Virar city will face an irregular and low-pressure water supply for the next four days, as technical glitches caused by recent power outages have disrupted water treatment operations, the Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) confirmed.

Since June 13, heavy rains and strong winds have lashed the region, leading to multiple power failures due to fallen tree branches damaging electric lines. These outages have affected key infrastructure, including the Kavadas Pumping Station and Surya Nagar Water Treatment Plant, both of which are powered by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company.

Water supply in Vasai-Virar comes from two primary sources — the Surya Phase I and III schemes, from which VVCMC receives 200 MLD (million litres per day), and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) scheme, which supplies around 403 MLD, including 150 MLD through its water supply project.

However, the MMRDA’s Surya scheme has been severely impacted by the electricity disruptions at the treatment plants in Maswan and Fog. As a result, water supply across several areas in the city is expected to remain inconsistent.

The timing of the crisis is especially challenging, as Vasai-Virar continues to experience rapid urban growth, with new housing complexes increasing the daily water demand. Summer water shortages are common in the city, but the monsoon-related damage has worsened the situation this year.

VVCMC has urged citizens to use water judiciously during this period and assured that efforts are underway to coordinate with MSEDCL for faster restoration of power and normalisation of water supply. Further updates will be issued based on repair progress.
