Water Crisis Looms as Mumbai Faces Severe Supply Disruption from BMC’s Pise Water Pumping Station Incident

Mumbai, 27th February 2024: A recent incident at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Pise water pumping station has disrupted water supply across various parts of Mumbai. The disruption has particularly affected the eastern suburbs, impacting water supply from several reservoirs in the city, including Golanji, Fosbery, Raoli, and Bhandarwada.

Residents in these areas are facing a 24-hour water supply outage, with potential pressure issues in the western suburbs and other parts of Mumbai. The BMC is urging citizens to use water resources responsibly to help manage the situation effectively and expedite the restoration of essential water services.

Efforts are underway to rectify the situation and normalize the water supply in the affected regions. Additionally, a 10% water cut has been announced in certain areas of Bandra and Khar West (H-West ward) from February 27 to March 11 due to ongoing rehabilitation work at the Pali Hill Reservoir.

Repair and rehabilitation work on the 600-mm old water inlet main pipe at the Pali Hill reservoir in the H-West ward are causing reduced water supply. Residents in specific zones, including Gazdar Bandh, Dilip Kumar Zone, Pali Mala Zone, Union Park Zone (Khar West), Dandpada, Kantwadi, Sherli Rajan, and parts of Bandra West, will be affected by the water cut.

It’s worth noting that previous maintenance work on the 600 mm diameter water channel at the Pali Hill reservoir from February 16 to 21 also impacted the water supply in the H-West ward. Given the declining water levels in the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai, the BMC may announce further water cuts in the upcoming days to manage the situation effectively.
