29-Year-Old Faces Charges for Marrying and Assaulting a Minor in Navi Mumbai

Navi Mumbai, 5th January 2024: A 29-year-old man in Navi Mumbai has been booked for allegedly marrying a 12-year-old girl, repeatedly raping her, and impregnating her, according to police reports on Friday. The illegal child marriage occurred approximately six months ago, and both the man and the minor are originally from Satara district in Maharashtra.
The shocking incident came to light when a local doctor in Panvel, during a survey on Thursday, discovered that the girl was four months pregnant and promptly alerted the police. A case has been registered against the man under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
This disturbing case follows a similar incident reported earlier in Navi Mumbai, where an unidentified person was accused of repeatedly raping and impregnating a 17-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh. The assault came to light when the girl, visiting her brother in Kopar Khairane, went to a hospital and was found to be 34 weeks pregnant. The Navi Mumbai police subsequently registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and POCSO Act. The case was later transferred to Siddharthnagar police station for further investigation.
