Thane, 19th March 2024: The Thane Police in Maharashtra have apprehended a man from Thane district on suspicion of strangling his 27-year-old wife to death over allegations of infidelity and burying her body in a derelict house, as per an official statement on Tuesday.

The body of the deceased woman, identified as Jyotsana Shelar from Ambernath, was discovered in Angaon village in Bhiwandi taluka of Thane district.

Assistant Inspector Dharmaraj Sonke of Ganeshpuri police station stated, “A police patrol team received information regarding the disappearance of Jyotsana Shelar on March 5. Her relatives filed a missing person’s report at the Shivaji Nagar police station.” The investigation led to the detention of her 29-year-old husband, Digambar Shelar, who eventually confessed to killing his wife and burying her body in his native Angaon village.

According to the police, the couple had lived together for a brief period after their marriage, but frequent quarrels erupted due to the husband’s suspicions about his wife’s fidelity. Subsequently, Jyotsana chose to reside with her parents in Ambarnath, leading to further discord between them.

On March 5, Digambar convinced Jyotsana to accompany him to his village, where he murdered her by strangulation and buried her in a pit. After twelve days, the police excavated her highly decomposed body based on the information provided by the accused, which was then sent to Mumbai’s J J Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The accused was arrested and charged under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In a separate incident, a Thane court acquitted a 39-year-old man accused of murder in a 2014 case, citing insufficient evidence. Additional Sessions Judge Amit M Shete noted in the order issued on March 11 that the prosecution failed to substantiate the charges against the accused, attributing the acquittal to inadequate investigation by the investigating officer.
