Thane Court Orders Fine or Jail for Man Convicted of Brutal Dog Killing in Mira Road

Thane, 4th July 2024: The 8th Judicial Magistrate First Class court in Thane has issued a judgment requiring a convicted individual to either pay a fine of Rs 30,000 or serve a one-month prison term for the act of brutally kicking a dog to death at his housing society in Mira Road.

Animal advocates have expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, delivered by Judge Ruchi Bhagat under section 248(2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, believing it will strongly convey that perpetrators of animal cruelty will face consequences in society.

According to animal rights activist Pallavi Patil, the convicted man, Kailash Singh (65), committed the offence in April 2020 by cruelly kicking a gentle female dog at his residential complex on Mira Road. Members of the society who are animal lovers obtained CCTV footage documenting the incident.

Highlighting that the local police had filed charges under section 429 of the IPC and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Patil emphasized the importance of applying cruelty laws effectively to ensure justice for innocent animals who endure significant suffering.
