Union Minister Approves Rs 185 Crore for Thane-Mulund Suburban Railway Station

Thane, 5th July 2024: The long-awaited suburban railway station project between Thane and Mulund has received a significant boost, with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw approving Rs 185 crore in funds for laying tracks, constructing platforms, and other essential components, according to an official from Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The total project cost is Rs 264 crore, with Rs 185 crore earmarked for developing the operational area, including the administration building, tracks, and platforms.

Initially, the entire cost was to be borne by TMC under its smart city initiative. However, due to financial constraints faced by the civic body, the railway ministry has taken over funding the project.

Support from the ministry will allow TMC to focus on completing other ongoing projects without financial concerns, helping to avoid potential delays. Although TMC is relieved from the duty of the Thane-Mulund suburban railway station project, it remains responsible for developing the surrounding area outside the station. This includes roads, elevated roads connecting highways, parking areas, and bus stations.

The project, which began in 2019, has achieved about 30 % progress so far. Authorities expect the new railway station connecting Thane and Mulund in the Mumbai district to be ready by December 2025. Once operational, the station is expected to significantly reduce the number of passengers using the existing Thane station, as many commuters from nearby Mulund and Ghodbunder areas in Thane are likely to prefer the new facility.

Railways Minister Vaishnaw announced the funding on Wednesday after a delegation comprising Shiv Sena MPs from Kalyan and Thane, Dr Shrikant Shinde and Naresh Mhaske respectively, along with Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, met with Vaishnaw at Rail Bhavan in the national capital.
