Mumbai Rain Chaos: Train Cancellations and School Closures Amid Heavy Downpour
Mumbai, 8th July 2024: Mumbai and its suburbs experienced heavy rainfall on Monday morning, with several areas recording significant precipitation. The city saw over 300mm of rainfall in six hours from 1 am to 7 am. This intense rain caused waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupted suburban train services. Notable rainfall measurements included Chakala (278mm), Aarey (259mm), Powai (314mm), Sewri (186mm), and Dharavi (165mm).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted moderate rain for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on Monday, with isolated heavy rain expected in Raigad. BMC officials mentioned a shift in water management strategy, halting drawing water from reserve stocks and resuming supply from lakes.
In response to the weather conditions, BMC declared a holiday for the first session in all BMC-run, government, and private schools and colleges in Mumbai to minimize inconvenience to students. The heavy rainfall also led to the cancellation of several train services due to waterlogging at various stations in the Mumbai division. Among the affected trains were:
1. 12110 (MMR-CSMT Panchavati Express)
2. 11010 (PUNE-CSMT Sinhagadh Express)
3. 12124 (PUNE-CSMT Deccan Queen)
4. 11007 (CSMT-PUNE Deccan)
5. 12127 (CSMT-PUNE Intercity Express)
