Thane Police File Case Against Five for Extortion and Casteist Slurs in Badlapur Slum Redevelopment
Thane, 13th July 2024: In Thane district, police have filed a case against five individuals for attempting to extort money from a developer and using casteist slurs, according to an official statement.
The accused, who resides in a slum colony in Badlapur scheduled for redevelopment under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme, allegedly demanded Rs 17 crore from the developer and some residents of the slum last month to permit the redevelopment. They purportedly received Rs 2 lakh from the builder during this period.
Additionally, the accused reportedly made derogatory remarks based on caste towards certain members of the slum colony. They have been charged with offences including extortion and criminal intimidation. The police have also invoked the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against them, as confirmed by the station house officer of the Badlapur East police station.
