Speeding Innova Hits Auto-Rickshaw in Navi Mumbai, Driver Killed in Tragic Collision

Mumbai, 31st July 2024: In a distressing incident that underscores the rise in hit-and-run cases across Maharashtra, a speeding Innova car collided with an auto-rickshaw in Navi Mumbai’s Vashi area on July 27. The collision, captured by a nearby CCTV camera and now widely shared on social media, resulted in the tragic death of the auto-rickshaw driver.
The severity of the crash left other commuters visibly shaken. The footage, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the account ‘Ghar ke kalesh,’ has garnered over 31,500 views. The caption accompanying the video stated, “A speeding Innova car crushed an Auto-rickshaw in Navi Mumbai.”
The viral footage has sparked widespread speculation about the cause of the accident, with some attributing it to brake failure and others blaming reckless driving.
Recent Hit-And-Run Cases
This incident is part of a troubling pattern of hit-and-run accidents in Maharashtra. In May, a 17-year-old boy driving a Porsche under the influence of alcohol collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two IT professionals in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area. The case drew significant public outrage when the accused was granted bail with minimal conditions, including writing an essay and providing a surety from his grandfather.
Another recent case involved Mihir Shah, the son of a Shiv Sena leader, who was driving a car that struck and dragged a 45-year-old woman for a kilometre. Shah and his driver then removed the woman’s body from the car and switched places, with the driver running over her again. Shah, who had been evading arrest, was eventually apprehended by the police along with his mother and sister.
In response to the rising number of such incidents, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has voiced serious concern. He emphasized that justice will not be influenced by social status or wealth. “I am deeply alarmed by the increase in hit-and-run incidents in Maharashtra. It is unacceptable for the powerful and influential to exploit their status to evade justice. My Government will not tolerate such abuses of the system,” he stated.
The increasing frequency of hit-and-run accidents has heightened calls for stricter enforcement and greater accountability to ensure road safety and justice for victims.
