Mumbai Records Hottest December Day In 16 Years With 37.3°C Temperature

Mumbai, 6th December 2024: Mumbai experienced its hottest December day in 16 years on Wednesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recording a maximum temperature of 37.3 degrees Celsius. The Santacruz observatory, which tracks suburban temperatures, recorded 37.3 degrees Celsius, while the Colaba station, monitoring the island city, logged 35 degrees Celsius.

According to Sushma Nair, a scientist with IMD Mumbai, the last time the city recorded higher December temperatures was on December 5, 2008, when the Kalina observatory noted 37.7 degrees Celsius.

Interestingly, just last week, on November 29, Mumbai recorded a minimum temperature of 16.5 degrees Celsius, marking the coldest November day in eight years. However, by Wednesday morning, the city and parts of Maharashtra experienced light rain, with the minimum temperature exceeding 25 degrees Celsius.

Cloudy skies persisted since Tuesday, with the Colaba observatory recording a minimum temperature of 25.8 degrees Celsius and the Santacruz observatory noting 25.5 degrees Celsius. Light rain was reported in some areas of the city.

IMD attributed the unseasonal rains to moisture incursion caused by Cyclone Fengal.
