Mumbai: One Dead, 66 Rescued After Ferry Capsizes Near Gateway of India

Mumbai, 18th December 2024: One passenger lost their life, and 66 others were rescued after a ferry capsized on Wednesday while travelling from Mumbai’s Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. Around a dozen passengers are still missing, with search operations ongoing.

The ferry, reportedly carrying about 80 passengers, was struck by a small boat around 4 pm, leading to the accident. Videos from the scene captured ongoing rescue efforts.

A coordinated rescue mission involving the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Police has been launched. The operation includes 11 Navy boats, three Marine Police boats, and one Coast Guard vessel, along with four helicopters conducting Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident while prioritizing the search for survivors.
