Deven Bharti Appointed as New Mumbai Police Commissioner

Mumbai, 39th April 2025: Senior IPS officer Deven Bharti has been appointed as the new Mumbai Police Commissioner, replacing Vivek Phansalkar, who retired on Wednesday. The Home Department issued the appointment order the same day, with Bharti set to take charge by Wednesday evening.

A 1994-batch IPS officer, Bharti brings extensive experience within the Mumbai Police, having served in several key roles including Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Chief of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and Additional Commissioner of the Crime Branch.

During the Thackeray-led government in 2020, Bharti was transferred from his role as ATS Chief and subsequently appointed Additional Director General of Police at the Maharashtra State Security Corporation. Later, he was elevated to the position of Special Commissioner of Police, a role he held for the past two years.

His appointment as Mumbai’s top cop marks a return to operational leadership in one of India’s most high-profile police forces.

Bharti’s leadership comes at a time when Mumbai is witnessing major infrastructure and security transitions. His experience across key departments is expected to play a crucial role in tackling urban law enforcement challenges.
