Mumbai Police Promotions to Be Celebrated Ceremonially, Says Commissioner Deven Bharti

Mumbai, 4th June, 2025: In a move aimed at restoring dignity and pride in service, Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti has announced that promotions within the police force will now be conferred ceremonially in the presence of senior officers and the families of the promoted personnel.

More than 500 police personnel, including constables, naiks, and head constables, were recently promoted under this revised policy. The order revives an earlier tradition common in the defence forces where promotions are celebrated in formal ceremonies, a practice that had gradually faded in the police force.

Bharti emphasized that promotions are not merely administrative processes but a recognition of loyalty, dedication, and years of hard work. “Promotions should serve as a source of inspiration, not just a file entry,” he stated. A circular has been issued to institutionalize the ceremonial format across all regional divisions.

As per the directive, promotions from constable to assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and from head constable to ASI will be conferred by the Additional Commissioner of Police. For those promoted from sub-inspector to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), the ceremonies will be conducted by the Joint Commissioner of Police.

Last week, 169 head constables were promoted to ASIs, and 213 constables were promoted to head constables. In addition, 69 head constable drivers and 101 constable drivers received promotions. All were formally honored by the Additional Commissioners of their respective regions.

Going forward, promotion ceremonies will be held on the first day of the month following the promotion. With this policy in place, senior officers are now expected to ensure that these events are organized deliberately and respectfully.

This initiative aims to boost morale, instill pride, and acknowledge the commitment of Mumbai Police personnel in a more meaningful way.
