Mumbai: Drunk Father Arrested for Brutally Assaulting 5-Year-Old Daughter in Mankhurd

Mumbai, 1st July 2025: A 38-year-old man was arrested in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area for allegedly beating and strangling his five-year-old daughter while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, police confirmed on Sunday.

The incident came to light after a neighbour captured the brutal assault on video and sent it to a local social worker. The social activist immediately alerted the Mankhurd police, who rushed to the scene near Karbala Maidan and rescued the minor from the accused’s custody.

The accused, identified as Rajeshyam Raghuram, lived with his wife and two children. According to police, he had been addicted to drugs for several years and was often unemployed. In his intoxicated state, he frequently assaulted his wife and children, residents said.

On Tuesday, while his wife was out for domestic work, Raghuram allegedly slapped and strangled his daughter, leaving her screaming in pain. A teenage girl living next door heard the commotion and filmed the horrifying incident on her phone. She forwarded the video to a social worker known in the locality, who promptly reported the matter to authorities.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, police arrived at the residence and found the child in a distressed state. A case was immediately registered, and Raghuram was arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Juvenile Justice Act for child abuse and assault.

Police officials praised the alertness of the neighbour and the timely intervention of social workers, which likely prevented further harm to the child. The minor is now under medical observation and counselling.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any signs of domestic violence or child abuse in their neighbourhoods.
