Mumbai: Massive Pothole Near Churchgate Income Tax Office Raises Safety Concerns

Mumbai ,1st July 2025: A large pothole on Maharshi Karve Road near the Income Tax office in Churchgate has been endangering commuters for over a month, drawing public anger and renewed criticism of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s handling of road maintenance during monsoon.

Despite repeated complaints from citizens, the crater-sized pothole remains unattended, disrupting traffic flow and posing a serious risk to motorists, especially two-wheeler riders. Several minor accidents have been reported in the area, raising urgent concerns about passenger safety.

This stretch of road falls under the Central Roads Department of the BMC. Social activist Santosh Devandkar slammed the civic body, stating that despite awarding contracts worth ₹5 crore for road repairs in BMC’s A, B, C, and D wards, the execution has been poor. He noted that roads between Churchgate and Charni Road have been damaged at multiple locations.

The BMC had delayed its annual pre-monsoon pothole repair works this year. Normally initiated in April, the tendering process began only in May, causing a late start to road repairs. Though the civic body has claimed to focus on fixing potholes citywide, visible damage persists across several major roads, including the stretch near Churchgate.

Civic officials acknowledged the presence of the pothole and assured that an inquiry would be launched to determine the cause of the delay. A senior official confirmed that action will be taken against those responsible for the inaction.

With daily traffic comprising government vehicles, school buses, and private cars, citizens are demanding immediate repairs and long-term solutions. The situation highlights the ongoing struggle Mumbai faces every monsoon, despite repeated promises of pothole-free roads.
