Mumbai: Encounter Specialist-Turned-Crime Branch Officer Daya Nayak Promoted to ACP Rank

Mumbai, 29th July 2025: Noted Mumbai Police officer Daya Nayak, once famed as an ‘encounter specialist,’ has been promoted to the post of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). The promotion was formalized through an order issued by the Maharashtra Home Department.
Nayak, who began his career with the Mumbai Police in 1995 and is currently assigned to the Bandra Crime Branch unit, gained widespread recognition in the late 1990s for his role in several high-profile encounters against underworld operatives. His life and work even inspired a Bollywood film.
Alongside Nayak, senior inspectors Jivan Kharat, Deepak Dalvi, and Pandurang Pawar have also been elevated to the ACP rank under the same government order.
Despite facing a disproportionate assets case filed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau in 2006, Nayak was later cleared of all charges. He has also served in the Maharashtra ATS and played a key role in cracking the Ambani residence security threat and the 2021 murder of businessman Mansukh Hiren.
