Mumbai Monorail Breaks Down Between Chembur and Bhakti Park, 200 Passengers Being Rescued Amid Heavy Rains
Mumbai, 19th August 2025: In a major disruption caused by heavy rains, local train services and road traffic in Mumbai were already affected on Tuesday evening, and the city’s monorail also came to a grinding halt. Around 200 passengers got stranded when a running monorail suddenly stopped due to a technical fault between Chembur and Bhakti Park around 6.15 pm.
According to officials, passengers panicked after the monorail stopped, and many broke the glass windows to allow fresh air inside as suffocation increased. Soon after, passengers contacted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) emergency helpline number 1916 for immediate assistance.
Taking swift action, the Mumbai Fire Brigade rushed to the spot with three snorkel vehicles and an electric ladder to begin the evacuation. A medical team from the BMC also reached the site, while the nearest civic hospital was instructed to remain on high alert for any emergency cases.
An additional monorail was sent to assist, but it was of no use. Finally, the fire brigade teams launched a full-scale rescue operation, safely evacuating the trapped passengers one by one. More rescue teams are on their way to ensure complete safety, officials confirmed.
Authorities have appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in rain-affected areas and to immediately contact the BMC’s helpline 1916 or the Mumbai Fire Brigade in case of emergencies.
