Mumbai’s Reservoir Levels Jump to 28.92% After Heavy Rains; IMD Issues Orange Alert, Schools Shut
Mumbai, 7th July 2026: Continuous heavy monsoon showers across Mumbai and its reservoir catchment areas have significantly improved the city’s water reserves, with the combined storage in the seven lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai rising to 28.92% of total capacity, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Officials said the reservoirs recorded an increase of nearly 12 percentage points in the last 24 hours, following intense rainfall that lashed Mumbai, its suburbs and adjoining regions since Sunday.
The heavy rains have also disrupted transportation across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. A landslide in the Bhor Ghat section around 4 a.m. blocked all three railway lines connecting Mumbai and Pune, while cloudburst-like rainfall in Palghar triggered widespread disruption. Several parts of Mumbai witnessed waterlogging and traffic delays as intermittent heavy showers continued through Tuesday.
According to BMC data, the current water levels in the city’s reservoirs are:
* Upper Vaitarna – 12.25%
* Modak Sagar – 52.22%
* Tansa – 42.85%
* Middle Vaitarna – 26.12%
* Bhatsa – 24.92%
* Vihar – 98.98%
* Tulsi – 95.88%
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall over Mumbai and its suburbs during the next 24 hours, with isolated locations likely to receive extremely heavy showers. Strong winds with speeds of 60–70 kmph, gusting up to 80 kmph, are also expected.
Authorities have additionally warned of high tides of nearly four metres, expected around 4:30 p.m. on July 7 and 5:45 a.m. on July 8. The BMC has appealed to residents to stay away from beaches and coastal areas during these periods and avoid unnecessary travel.
In view of the IMD’s Orange Alert, the BMC has declared a holiday for all government, private and municipal schools and colleges in Mumbai on Tuesday to ensure the safety of students. Citizens have also been advised to remain indoors unless travel is absolutely essential.
With more rainfall predicted over the coming days, civic authorities and emergency services remain on alert as they monitor water levels, transport disruptions and weather-related emergencies across the city.
