Mumbai: Video Showing Officer Threatening Protesters; Police Orders Probe
Mumbai, 23rd July 2026: Mumbai Police has initiated an internal inquiry after a video circulating on social media allegedly showed a police officer threatening students detained during protests over the alleged NEET examination irregularities.
The viral clip, whose authenticity is yet to be officially verified, purportedly captures the officer warning students against participating in future demonstrations. In the video, the officer is allegedly heard saying that if they returned to the protests, they could be falsely implicated in a narcotics case, leading to their arrest and denial of bail.
The video has triggered widespread criticism from opposition leaders and student groups, who have raised concerns over the conduct of law enforcement during the ongoing protests. The Congress party condemned the alleged remarks, stating that if the video is found to be genuine, it would amount to an attempt to intimidate peaceful protesters and undermine democratic rights.
Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal also criticised the alleged incident, accusing the police of using threats to discourage students from exercising their democratic right to protest. He called for strict action if the allegations are substantiated.
Responding to the controversy, Mumbai Police confirmed that an internal inquiry has been ordered to verify the authenticity of the video and examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan said the department would conduct a detailed investigation before deciding on any disciplinary or legal action. Police officials added that the identity of the officer seen in the video has not yet been confirmed and that conclusions will be drawn only after the inquiry is completed.
The development comes amid continuing nationwide protests over the alleged NEET examination irregularities, with students and opposition parties demanding greater transparency, accountability and reforms in the conduct of competitive entrance examinations.
