Mumbai Railway Safety Drive: 677 Cases Detected, Rs 10.10 Lakh Fine Collected in July
Mumbai, 2nd August 2026: Central Railway’s Mumbai Division detected 677 cases and recovered ₹10.10 lakh in penalties during a month-long special enforcement drive conducted across stations and trains from July 1 to July 31, 2026.
The drive focused on violations related to unauthorised occupation of reserved compartments and seats, unauthorised hawking and begging, and trespassing on railway premises and tracks. Ticket-checking squads, including Court batches at CSMT and Kalyan, suburban batches, women-only Tejaswini batches, station ticket-checking personnel and amenity teams on trains conducted the checks with support from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), commercial officers and inspectors.
321 cases involving Divyangjan facilities
The highest number of cases, 321, were registered under Section 155(1)(a) of the Railways Act, 1989, with ₹6.37 lakh collected in penalties.
The provision covers unauthorised entry into railway compartments and unauthorised occupation of reserved accommodation, including facilities designated for persons with disabilities (Divyangjan).
Another 93 cases were detected under Section 155(1)(b), with ₹93,000 recovered in penalties. The provision deals with unauthorised travel or occupation of compartments reserved for specific categories of passengers.
99 cases of unauthorised hawking and begging
Under Section 144 of the Railways Act, 1989, railway authorities detected 99 cases and recovered ₹1.98 lakh in penalties.
The section prohibits unauthorised hawking, begging and canvassing on trains and railway premises. It provides for imprisonment of up to one year, a fine that may extend to ₹2,000, or both.
164 trespassing cases
A total of 164 cases were detected under Section 147 of the Railways Act, with ₹82,000 collected in penalties.
The provision deals with trespassing on railway tracks and property and provides for imprisonment of up to six months, a fine of up to ₹1,000, or both.
Mankhurd records highest enforcement
Among the stations covered during the drive, Mankhurd recorded the highest number of cases, with 289 violations and ₹4.49 lakh recovered in fines.
It was followed by:
– Vadala Road: 232 cases; ₹2.57 lakh recovered
– Thane: 61 cases; ₹1.22 lakh recovered
Enforcement action was also carried out at CSMT, Kalyan, Ghatkopar, Panvel, Masjid, Chinchpokli, Chembur, Sanpada, Sewri, Vashi and Lonavala, among other locations.
Central Railway said such enforcement drives will continue as part of its ongoing measures to maintain discipline and passenger safety.
Passengers have been advised to travel with valid tickets, avoid occupying accommodation reserved for Divyangjan passengers, refrain from unauthorised vending and begging, and stay away from railway tracks and other restricted areas.
