Mumbai Driver Injured After Car Falls 25 Feet Into Parking Lift Shaft at Charkop Housing Society

Charkop, 4th August 2026: A driver sustained injuries after his car plunged nearly 25 feet into an automated parking lift shaft at a residential housing society in Mumbai’s Charkop area on Monday, after he allegedly drove into the open shaft assuming the parking platform was in place.

According to police, the incident took place inside a housing society in Charkop, Kandivali West, where the driver was attempting to park his vehicle on the second floor. Preliminary investigation suggests that the automated parking platform was not positioned at that level when the driver entered the parking bay. Unaware that the platform was missing, he continued driving forward, causing the car to fall nearly two storeys into the shaft.

The impact left the driver injured and trapped inside the vehicle. Residents and emergency responders rushed to the spot and rescued him before he was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police later confirmed that his condition is stable and that he is out of danger.

A CCTV video of the incident has since surfaced online, showing the car slowly moving towards the parking bay before disappearing into the open shaft. The footage has gone viral on social media, drawing attention to the safety mechanisms in automated parking systems used by residential buildings.

Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials are examining whether there was a technical malfunction in the automated parking system or negligence in its operation and maintenance. Investigators are also looking into whether mandatory safety features, including warning systems and physical barriers, were functional at the time of the incident.

No case of foul play has been reported so far, and further investigation is underway to ascertain responsibility for the accident.
