Mumbai: Five Senior Citizens Injured After Canopy Collapses at Sion’s Pratiksha Nagar Maidan

Mumbai, 12th August 2026: Five senior citizens were injured after a canopy meant to provide shelter to elderly residents collapsed at Raghunath Vitthal Chavan Maidan in Pratiksha Nagar, Sion, on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred when several senior citizens had gathered under the canopy to take shelter from the rain. The structure suddenly collapsed, leaving five people trapped beneath the debris.

On seeing the incident, local residents immediately rushed to the spot and helped pull the injured senior citizens out from under the collapsed structure. They were subsequently taken to Sion Hospital in private ambulances. According to hospital officials, all five injured persons are in stable condition.

The injured have been identified as Dhondiram Ghopkar (65), Ganpat Ambole (79), Pramila Jadhav (68), Laxmi Shitliya (65) and Sunita More (64).

The canopy reportedly had a GI frame and a cement-slab roof and was installed as a seating and rain shelter for senior citizens. A video showing the aftermath of the collapse has gone viral on social media, prompting concerns over the safety and maintenance of public structures in Mumbai.

The cause of the collapse is yet to be established. Questions have also been raised over whether such public structures are regularly inspected and maintained, particularly during the monsoon when heavy rainfall can put additional stress on temporary and ageing structures.

The incident has sparked concern among local residents, with many questioning the safety of facilities provided for senior citizens in public spaces. Further details regarding the structural condition of the canopy and any action by the civic authorities are awaited.
