Mumbai: Shinde Sena Launches ‘Mission Tiger’ to Strengthen Position in Mumbai BMC

Mumbai, 27th August 2026: The Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has reportedly launched a political strategy dubbed ‘Mission Tiger’ to strengthen its position in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and stake a stronger claim to the mayor’s post.

As per the current Mahayuti arrangement, the BJP’s Ritu Tawde is serving as the mayor, while Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Ghadi is the deputy mayor. Under the reported power-sharing formula, the BJP is set to retain the mayor’s post for the first two-and-a-half years, after which the Shiv Sena is expected to seek the post for the remaining one-and-a-quarter years.

According to sources cited in reports, the Shinde-led Sena is now working to increase its numbers in the BMC by attempting to bring corporators from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) into its camp.

The strategy is reportedly being compared to the political developments in Parliament, where six MPs from the Thackeray faction joined the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, significantly strengthening its position.

At present, the BJP has 88 corporators, while the Shiv Sena has 28 and the NCP has three in the BMC. The Shinde faction believes that successfully attracting a sizeable number of UBT corporators could substantially improve its strength in the civic body.

With a stronger numerical position, the Shiv Sena could potentially increase pressure on the BJP over the mayoral arrangement and seek an extended tenure for its mayor.

The reported ‘Mission Tiger’ comes amid growing political manoeuvring within the Mahayuti over control of the BMC and its top political post.
