20-Year-Old Student Allegedly Attacked in Women’s Coach of Mumbai Local Train; Escapes Attempted Assault

Mumbai, 3rd September 2026: A shocking incident involving the alleged attack and attempted assault of a 20-year-old female student inside a women’s compartment of a moving Mumbai suburban train has raised fresh concerns over the safety of women commuters, particularly during early morning hours.

The incident reportedly took place on the Dahanu-Borivali MEMU local train, which departed from Dahanu railway station at approximately 5.17 am. According to preliminary information, the student was travelling alone in the women’s compartment when an unidentified man allegedly entered the coach.

Taking advantage of the absence of other women passengers, the man allegedly attempted to initiate a conversation with the student by asking about the train’s location. Shortly afterwards, he allegedly attacked her, grabbed her by the throat and attempted to forcibly assault her.

However, the student put up a strong resistance and managed to defend herself. In an attempt to escape, she reportedly struck the accused in the eyes and pushed him away before raising an alarm.

Her cries for help alerted passengers in adjoining compartments, who rushed towards the women’s coach and attempted to apprehend the accused. However, amid the commotion and a struggle near Vangaon railway station, the unidentified man reportedly managed to escape.

Following the incident, the student attempted to contact the emergency helpline number 112. Concerns have been raised over the alleged delay in receiving immediate assistance.

The incident has once again brought the issue of women’s safety in Mumbai’s suburban railway network into focus. Questions are being raised about security arrangements in women’s compartments during early morning hours, especially when passengers are travelling alone.

The absence of security or police personnel in the vicinity of the coach has also become a matter of concern. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and take necessary steps to identify and apprehend the accused.
