Mumbai, 19th October 2026: Central Railway commissioned the 13.53-km Khardi–Kasara third railway line on 18 October 2026, completing a key section of the Kalyan–Kasara Third Line Project. The new electrified line was cleared for train operations at a maximum speed of 100 kmph following an inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) and a successful speed trial at 117 kmph.

The commissioning followed a 12-hour traffic block conducted on 17 and 18 October to complete major track connections and remodelling work in Kasara yard.

The CRS inspected the new line on 17 and 18 October. During the inspection, the commissioner appreciated the quality of construction, track work and safety-related arrangements, according to Central Railway.

The project involved laying a new electrified track through hilly terrain, strengthening and extending bridges, carrying out extensive earthwork, installing modern signalling and electrification systems, and upgrading the Khardi and Kasara railway yards.

The third line is expected to increase railway capacity and ease congestion on the Mumbai–Kasara corridor. Once the entire project is completed, the additional infrastructure is expected to support smoother movement of passenger and freight trains and improve punctuality.

The Khardi–Kasara section forms part of the wider Kalyan–Kasara third-line project, which aims to expand capacity on this important railway route.
