Vasai-Virar Fines 60-Plus Builders Rs 1 Lakh Each Over Air Quality Monitoring Lapses

Vasai-Virar, 28th October 2026: The Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has imposed fines of ₹1 lakh each on more than 60 builders for allegedly violating air pollution control norms at construction sites, including failing to install mandatory air quality monitoring displays or displaying incorrect readings.

VVCMC Commissioner Prithviraj BP said inspections revealed that several developers had either not installed the required air quality monitoring system (AQMS) display boards or were providing misleading information about pollution levels. The civic body has imposed penalties on the violators, he said.

Construction sites generate dust from materials such as cement, sand and soil, contributing to air pollution in surrounding areas. Developers are required to install monitoring displays showing particulate matter levels and other air quality readings.

However, the alleged discrepancies in readings have raised concerns about whether the monitoring systems accurately reflect pollution levels at construction sites. Social activist Mackenzie Dabre also questioned the credibility of some displays, alleging that certain sites showed air quality readings comparable to those of cities abroad despite ongoing construction activity.

To strengthen enforcement, the civic administration has formed ward-level inspection teams to check the installation of air quality monitoring displays and sensors, along with compliance with other mandatory pollution control measures.

The civic body has also prepared a winter action plan focusing on dust control and emission reduction at construction sites. Commissioner Prithviraj BP said inspections would be intensified and penalties doubled to deter developers from violating pollution control norms.

The action comes amid growing concerns over deteriorating air quality across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with construction dust among the sources requiring closer monitoring and enforcement.
