Vasai: Action Taken Against 18,000 Rickshaw Drivers In One Year
Vasai, 18th February 2023: The transport department has planned action against the rickshaw pullers who violate the rules in Vasai, Virar city. The traffic police have taken action against nearly 18,904 rickshaw owners during the year. Along with the increasing urbanization of the city, the number of rickshaws has started increasing. Since 2017, a large number of rickshaws have started plying on the roads due to the opening of licenses.
However, rickshaws are still being operated in the city in an unauthorized and illegal manner. On the other hand, some rickshaw pullers are driving rickshaws without following the traffic rules. These include unlicensed, non-batch, carrying extra passengers, charging extra fare, misbehaving with passengers, and driving expired rickshaws. To curb this type of traffic, Vasai’s transport department had taken up a campaign of action. In this campaign, 18,904 rickshaws have been prosecuted for violating the rules during the year. The transport department has informed that a fine of Rs 63,36,800 has been levied on violators.
According to the transport rules, only three passengers are allowed to sit in the rickshaw. However, more than three passengers are transported to various places in Vasai. There is a risk of accidents as more passengers are placed in the rickshaws than the capacity of the rickshaws. For this, the citizens are demanding that action should be taken against the rickshaw drivers who transport illegal passengers.
