Mumbai Braces for Cyclone Formation as Low Pressure Zone Develops in Arabian Sea

Mumbai, 5th June 2023: The formation of a low-pressure zone in the Arabian Sea has raised concerns as the Meteorological Department predicts its intensification into a cyclone within the next 48 hours. This development has led to forecasts of rainfall in Mumbai, Thane, and the Konkan region by the end of the week.

According to the Meteorological Department, the current low-pressure zone in the Arabian Sea has the potential to transform into a cyclonic storm. Private weather organizations have also indicated that the cyclone may track towards Gujarat. The crucial factor for cyclone formation is the sea surface temperature, which presently stands at around 31 degrees Celsius in the Arabian Sea, favoring the cyclonic activity.

The seasonal winds over the southern part of the Bay of Bengal and the South Arabian Sea are currently progressing slowly, reaching the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. However, the lack of favorable conditions for the monsoon winds to advance indicates a continuation of the prevailing weather pattern for the next two days.

Multiple weather models have been utilized to predict the storm’s trajectory, resulting in varying information regarding the exact timing and affected areas. Consequently, it remains uncertain to specify the precise date of the cyclone’s arrival, as acknowledged by Sushma Nair from the Meteorological Department.
