Mumbai: BMC Commissioner Inspects Mithi River Bridge, Emphasizes Monsoon Preparedness

Mumbai, 28th June 2023: Iqbal Singh Chahal, the Commissioner and Administrator of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), conducted a visit to the Mithi River Bridge located in the Bandra-Kurla complex today. During the inspection, he assessed the preparedness measures for the monsoon season.

Several officials, including Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) P. Velrasu, Joint Commissioner (Zone 3) Ranjit Dhakne, Deputy Commissioner (Infrastructure) Ulhas Mahale, H East Division Assistant Commissioner Swapnaja Kshirsagar, and other concerned officials, accompanied him during the visit.

Chahal addressed the potential heavy to very heavy rainfall forecasted for Mumbai in the next 4-5 days, starting from today. He issued a directive stating that all relevant officers must personally visit low-lying areas within their jurisdictions, where there is a likelihood of flooding, and take necessary and prompt action as required. In case of a need for dewatering, officials were instructed to activate the pumps without any delay. Ward officers were specifically instructed to closely monitor all the subways in their respective areas. Chahal also mentioned that he himself would conduct random visits to some of these spots.

The inspection and subsequent directives by Commissioner Chahal highlight the BMC’s commitment to ensuring the safety and preparedness of Mumbai’s infrastructure during the monsoon season. The Mithi River Bridge holds significance in maintaining smooth traffic flow, especially during heavy rainfall. The visit aimed to assess its condition and evaluate the effectiveness of preventive measures in place.
