Five Injured After Gas Leak Triggers Fire at IIT Bombay Hostel

Mumbai, 9th October 2026: Five people, including two children, were injured after a gas leak from a cylinder pipe triggered a fire at a hostel on the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay campus in Powai on Thursday night, 8th October.

According to officials, the incident was reported at around 10:24 pm at Hostel No. 6. Police personnel and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) staff reached the spot following the incident and assisted in rescuing the injured.

The injured have been identified as Ansh Ahirwar (12), Tahzeeb Alam (9), Ishwar Singh (37), Shivkumar Singh (34) and Anilkumar Yadav (23), according to reports.

All five were initially taken to the BMC-run Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar for treatment. Four of them were subsequently shifted to Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli, while one remained at Rajawadi Hospital.

Doctors reported that all five injured people were in stable condition.

The fire was triggered by a leak in the gas cylinder pipe, officials said. Further details regarding the circumstances leading to the incident were awaited.
