Customs Seizes Gold Worth ₹1.64 Cr from Flyer Claiming Handover by Unknown Person on Flight

Mumbai, 1st January 2024: In a significant operation, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs intercepted a flyer, Kamaluddin, arriving from Colombo on Saturday via Sri Lankan Airlines. The incident unfolded when Kamaluddin claimed that an unidentified person on the flight handed him a valuable parcel, instructing him to deliver it to a contact upon landing.
Upon questioning Kamaluddin about the contents of the parcel and the possibility of carrying dutiable goods or contraband, he initially denied any knowledge. However, a thorough search by customs officials revealed six pouches containing 24KT gold dust, weighing a total of 2,935 grams. The estimated value of the seized gold was Rs1.64 crore.
The concealed gold dust is believed to be part of an elaborate smuggling operation within India. Kamaluddin, after sustained interrogation, divulged that he received the gold from an unknown person on the flight. His instructions were to hand over the valuable consignment to another person waiting at the destination who would identify him upon landing.
Officials have stated that the investigation is currently in its preliminary stage. The disclosed information regarding the nexus involved in the smuggling attempt is yet to be verified. Customs authorities are working to establish the identities of those involved and unravel the network behind this illicit operation.
The successful interception underscores the vigilance of Mumbai Customs in combating smuggling activities. Authorities are likely to review and strengthen security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The cooperation of airlines and enhanced screening procedures may be part of the ongoing efforts to curb the illegal transportation of goods across borders.
