BMC Pumps Out 16,451 Crore Liters of Rainwater in Four Days Across Mumbai

Mumbai, 19th August 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has pumped out a total of 16,451.55 million litres (1,645.155 crore litres) of rainwater between August 16 and August 19 (till noon) through six pumping stations across the city.
According to official data, all pumps at the six pumping stations were operational for a total of 761 hours and 38 minutes during this period. On Tuesday alone, as the city witnessed extremely heavy rainfall, 182.5 crore liters of rainwater were pumped out within six hours.
The volume of water pumped in four days is more than double the storage capacity of Tulsi Lake, which holds 804.6 crore liters of water.
The details of pumping stations and total water discharged are as follows:
* Irla: 8 pumps, 48,000 litres/second capacity, 3,768.48 crore litres pumped
* Cleveland Bunder: 7 pumps, 42,000 litres/second capacity, 2,906.02 crore litres pumped
* Gazdhar Bandh: 6 pumps, 36,000 litres/second capacity, 2,870.11 crore litres pumped
* Lovegrove: 10 pumps, 60,000 litres/second capacity, 2,826.50 crore litres pumped
* Haji Ali: 6 pumps, 36,000 litres/second capacity, 2,379.78 crore litres pumped
* Britannia: 6 pumps, 36,000 litres/second capacity, 1,700.66 crore litres pumped
In total, 43 pumps with a combined maximum capacity of 2,58,000 litres per second were operational across these stations, discharging the cumulative volume of 16,451.55 crore litres.
In addition to the main pumping stations, the civic body has deployed 540 dewatering pumps across low-lying areas in Mumbai to drain accumulated rainwater.
